Shy guy Negishi Soichi moves from the countryside to Tokyo to pursue his musical dreams. His goal is to become a folk singer-songwriter, the kind that strums acoustic guitars and brings joy to the world with cheery songs. But somehow he ends up the lead singer of the extreme death metal band Detroit Metal City (DMC).

Quiet, mild-mannered, and downright dorky by day, Soichi turns loud and vulgar by night when his alter-ego "Johannes Krauser II" takes stage in goth costume and face paint. Leading a strange and secret double life, Soichi and band climb the ladders of the J-rock indie scene. DMC is adored by their head-thrashing fans, but Soichi himself is too embarrassed to admit he's in the band. Worse yet, the girl of his dreams hates DMC even more than he does.
